Too many of our high streets are being taken over by gambling shops and high street casinos – and right now, local councils like Brent have virtually no power to stop it.
Even when residents and councillors object, current licencing laws make it effectively impossible to block new slot machine venues from opening in our communities. Right now, the legislation actively compels councils to favour approval of these applications – even when they know the community is against it.
We believe that has to change.
Brent Labour is calling on the Government to:
-
Give councils the legal power to refuse applications for new betting shops and high street casinos
-
Let local communities have a real say in the future of their high streets
-
Help keep our town centres safe, healthy, and family-friendly
These venues often target areas with higher deprivation, putting vulnerable residents at greater risk of gambling harm and anti-social behaviour. That’s not right.
We’re asking for your support. Sign our petition to take back control of our high streets.
Together, we can demand a fairer system—one that puts people before profit.
