John Poole

Educated at Mount Grace Comprehensive School in Potters Bar and Southgate Technical College, John went on to complete a BSc at the University of Nottingham and an MSc at the University of Exeter in the 1960s. He later gained a PGCE at Chelsea College (Centre for Nuffield Science) before joining the science department at Willesden High School in 1969.

John has lived in Kenton ward since 1972, when he and his late wife Jane moved into their family home in Brookfield Crescent. He taught science and biology at Wembley High School and later became Deputy Headteacher at Claremont High School. Jane worked as a social worker in Brent, and their three children attended local Brent schools.

A continuous member of Brent Labour since 1985, John served as Secretary of Brent North Labour Party in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and previously stood as a Labour candidate in Preston ward.

John has a long-standing commitment to environmental and biodiversity work in Kenton. A member of the National Trust, RSPB and Woodland Trust, he is active in Friends of Woodcock Park and helped establish the Brook Way Community Biodiversity Project CIC during the pandemic. Working with local residents, Brent Council Parks Service and partners including the Environment Agency, Thames Water, Thames21 and CURB, he has supported projects to improve green spaces and the water quality of the Wealdstone Brook, including planting schemes, pollinator gardens, and an ongoing river restoration project at Lindsay Drive roundabout. In 2022, the group secured a Breathe London air quality monitor for Kenton, which remains in operation at St Luke’s Hospice.

John is standing in Kenton because it is his home and he believes the ward should never be taken for granted. He is committed to being a visible, accessible local representative who will listen to residents and press for the investment and practical improvements Kenton deserves.
